This is a long story, but it's worth watching, thinking through, and if it touches you: helping in some way. But most importantly: to change perspective so they can really come out into the light! This day gave me so much, and I look up to Ági and her team, so I won't let go of their hands in the future either!
For three years now, the Pihenősziget in Szolnok has been helping parents of children with disabilities, where little ones and bigger ones can be taken for a weekend so that parents can recharge during that time. Its founder, as an affected mother herself, realized that most parents in similar situations don't have a strong family background like she does, so they can't put down their burdens even for a few hours a week - let alone for two days. Yet it would benefit the children too if they could do this.
In the newest episode of our video series Anyasorsok (Mother's Destinies), we talked with Ágnes Kiss, a mother of two, whose young son has an intellectual disability. In our video, Ágnes talked about her family's story and their initiative to help parents in similar situations, those who have no support system.
I have come into contact with the Pihenősziget in Szolnok and the dreamer of this wonderful place several times. Using Ágnes Kiss's words, I can boldly refer to children with disabilities and special needs as "kacifántos" (quirky/special). It's a fitting description that encompasses all the difficulties, beauty, and peculiarities. In this institution, professionals take care of such special children on weekends. It was a joy to hear that news of their cause has crossed county borders and many have joined forces to ensure their operation.
